What Travel Vaccines Do I Need?

The vaccines you need depend on a few key things:

Your destination
Health risks vary between countries, and even between different regions within the same country.

Length of stay
Longer trips usually mean more exposure to food, water and insect-borne diseases.

Activities planned
Trekking, animal contact, healthcare work and rural travel may mean you need extra protection.

Medical history and previous jabs
Health conditions, medication, pregnancy and your vaccine record all affect what we recommend.

Check Your Routine Vaccinations Before You Travel

Before travelling abroad, it is important to make sure your routine UK vaccinations are up to date.

This may include protection against:

  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio (Td/IPV)
  •  Other routine vaccinations relevant to your age and medical history

Our travel health team can discuss your vaccination history during your consultation.

⚠️ Clinical disclaimer

Vaccine recommendations vary depending on itinerary, region, season, length of stay, medical history and previous vaccinations. This table gives general guidance only and does not replace a personalised travel health consultation with a qualified clinician.

Common Travel Health Mistakes We See

During travel health consultations, our clinicians regularly meet travellers who:

  • Book appointments only a few days before departure, leaving limited time for vaccines that require multiple doses.
  • Assume previous travel provides lifelong protection when booster doses or additional vaccines may still be recommended.
  • Discover close to departure that destinations such as Hajj and Umrah require proof of Meningitis ACWY vaccination.
  • Travel through multiple countries without checking destination-specific vaccine recommendations or malaria risks.

These situations can affect travel preparation and vaccine scheduling. A travel health consultation helps identify potential risks early and ensures you receive advice tailored to your itinerary.

Travel Vaccination Prices

Travel vaccination prices vary depending on the vaccine, number of doses required and your travel health needs. The table below provides an indication of common private travel vaccination costs.

NHS vs Private Travel Vaccinations

Many travellers compare NHS travel vaccinations with private travel clinics.

Some travel vaccines, including Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Cholera and Polio boosters, may be available through NHS GP practices depending on local availability.

Private travel clinics can provide a wider range of travel vaccines, including Yellow Fever, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis and Hepatitis B, often with faster appointment availability and personalized travel health advice.

Travel Advice for Different Travellers

Families with children

Children may need extra checks to make sure routine and travel vaccines are up to date.

Older travellers

Older travellers may need additional travel health advice depending on existing medical conditions, medication and vaccination history. We can also review potential interactions between regular medication, travel vaccines and antimalarial treatments.

Business travellers

Short trips still carry risk, especially if travel is last minute or frequent.

Students studying abroad

Longer stays usually mean more vaccines and stronger prevention advice.

Backpackers

Rural travel, local food and crowded transport can all increase exposure risk.

Hajj and Umrah pilgrims

Specific vaccine guidance is needed, and Meningitis ACWY documentation is often required.

Visiting friends and relatives

This is a major travel group in the UK, and longer stays can mean higher exposure to local disease risks.

When Should You Get Travel Vaccinations?

Ideally, book 6 to 8 weeks before travel. That gives time for multi-dose vaccines, booster schedules and immune response to build properly.

If you’re travelling soon, still book an appointment. Many vaccines can still be given shortly before departure.

Malaria Prevention & Antimalarial Tablets

⚠️ Prescription safety warning: Atovaquone/Proguanil, Doxycycline and Mefloquine are prescription-only medicines. Suitability depends on destination, medical history, current medication, pregnancy, age and possible side effects. A clinical assessment by a qualified prescriber is required before any antimalarial is supplied.

  • Antimalarial options include Atovaquone/Proguanil, Doxycycline and Mefloquine.
  • Bite prevention matters too. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, use treated bed nets and avoid peak mosquito hours where possible.
  • ⚠️ Mefloquine may not be suitable for people with a history of depression, anxiety, seizures or certain mental health conditions. Our clinicians will assess your medical history and discuss the most appropriate antimalarial option for your trip.

Travel Health Advice Beyond Vaccines

Food and water safety

Drink safe water, avoid unsafe ice, eat freshly cooked hot food and wash your hands regularly.

Dengue prevention

Mosquito bites during the day can still cause illness, so repellent and protective clothing are important.

Altitude sickness

If you’re travelling to higher-altitude destinations, we can offer advice on acclimatisation, prevention and medication options.

Travel Vaccine Certificates & Entry Requirements

Some countries require proof of vaccination, such as a Yellow Fever certificate, Meningitis ACWY for Hajj and Umrah, or Polio documentation. We provide the required certificates where applicable.

Insights From Our Travel Health Team

During travel health consultations, we frequently find that travellers assume vaccine recommendations are the same across an entire country. In reality, recommendations can vary significantly depending on the region visited, length of stay, planned activities and access to medical care.

For example, a short city break may require different travel health precautions compared with extended rural travel, volunteering work, backpacking trips or visits to friends and relatives.

This is why personalised travel health advice is an important part of preparing for international travel.

It depends on destination, activities, medical history and previous vaccinations. A consultation gives the most accurate advice.

How much do travel vaccinations cost?

Travel vaccination costs vary depending on the vaccine required. Prices for common travel vaccines are shown in our travel vaccination price guide above. Consultation fees and vaccine costs will be confirmed during booking.
Are travel vaccines free on the NHS?

Some travel vaccines, including Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Cholera and Polio boosters, may be available through NHS GP practices depending on local availability. Other vaccines, such as Yellow Fever, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis and Hepatitis B, are usually available privately.

How far in advance should I book?
Ideally 6 to 8 weeks before departure.

Who medically reviews your information?
All clinical content is reviewed by Purvi C Shah, Superintendent Pharmacist (GPhC 2080242) and updated in line with NHS, UKHSA, NaTHNaC TravelHealthPro, WHO and UK travel health guidance.

Do travel vaccines have side effects?

Most travel vaccines are well tolerated. Some people experience mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, redness, swelling, tiredness, headache or a mild fever. Serious side effects are rare. During your consultation, we will explain the benefits and potential risks of any vaccine recommended for your trip.

What should I bring to my travel health appointment?

If possible, bring details of your travel itinerary, previous vaccination records, a list of current medications and information about any medical conditions. This helps our travel health team provide accurate recommendations based on your travel plans and medical history.

Can you provide travel vaccination certificates?

Yes. Where applicable, we can provide vaccination certificates and documentation required for travel. This may include International Certificates of Vaccination for Yellow Fever and documentation needed for certain countries or pilgrimage travel.

Do I need malaria tablets for my destination?

Malaria risk varies depending on the country, region, season and type of travel. During your consultation, we assess your itinerary and medical history to determine whether antimalarial medication is recommended and which option may be suitable for you.

Can I get travel vaccinations if I have a cold or fever?

If you have a mild cold, vaccination may still be possible. However, if you have a fever or are feeling unwell, vaccination may need to be delayed. Our clinicians will assess your situation and advise accordingly.

Are travel vaccines safe?

Travel vaccines used in the UK undergo rigorous safety testing and monitoring. Most people experience only mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, tiredness or a mild fever. Serious side effects are rare.

Can children receive travel vaccinations?

Can I get NHS travel vaccinations on a walk-in basis?

NHS travel vaccination services vary between GP practices and availability is not always offered on a walk-in basis. Many travellers choose private travel clinics when they need faster appointments, a wider range of vaccines or last-minute travel advice.

How long do travel vaccinations last?

The length of protection varies depending on the vaccine. Some travel vaccines can protect you for many years, while others may require booster doses. We can review your vaccination history during your consultation and advise if any boosters are needed.

What vaccines are required for Hajj and Umrah?

Meningitis ACWY vaccination is required for Hajj and Umrah travellers. Depending on your health, travel plans and vaccination history, other vaccines may also be recommended. We can advise you during your travel health consultation.

Do I need a Yellow Fever certificate?

Some countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination before entry. If a Yellow Fever certificate is required for your destination, we can provide the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) after vaccination.

Can I get travel vaccinations while pregnant?

Some travel vaccines may be suitable during pregnancy, while others may not be recommended. Our travel health team will assess your destination, stage of pregnancy and medical history before making recommendations.

Can I receive multiple travel vaccines at the same appointment?

Yes. In many cases, multiple travel vaccines can be given during the same appointment. Your travel health professional will advise what is appropriate based on your vaccination requirements and medical history.

Can I get travel vaccinations for multiple countries during one appointment?

Yes. If you are travelling to several countries, we can assess your full itinerary during a single consultation and recommend appropriate vaccines, malaria prevention options and travel health advice for your entire trip.

Can I get travel vaccinations at short notice?

Yes. Same-day travel vaccination appointments may be available depending on clinic capacity. While it is ideal to arrange travel vaccinations 6–8 weeks before departure, many vaccines can still be provided closer to your travel date.
